The Riviera Theater
The Riviera today announced its mid-summer show lineup. The historic theater will welcome acclaimed acts spanning all genres, from local folk favorites like Shovels & Rope to rock legends like Grand Funk Railroad. Upcoming shows at The Riviera include: The Ivy | Tuesday, August 29th at 7:30 pm This indie-synth pop duo from Oklahoma exemplifies a pure, nostalgic sound by delivering electrifying, retro-style grooves. The acclaimed pair came together in  Oklahoma’s music scene, having first met at music production school. The band has since been touring and honing their live shows, performing alongside acts such as LANY and The Band Camino. KT Tunstall | Tuesday, September 5th at 8 pm This Grammy-nominated Scottish musician burst onto the music scene with her 2004 multi-platinum debut, Eye to the Telescope, which spawned the global hits “Black Horse  and the Cherry Tree” and “Suddenly I See.” These songs, paired with her pioneering looping skills, established Tunstall as a captivating and dynamic performer, as well as a  songwriter with a knack for balancing introspective folk and propulsive rock. Doors open at 7 pm and the show starts at 8 pm. Donna the Buffalo | Friday, September 8th at 8 pm Originally from the Finger Lakes town of Trumansburg, New York, Donna the Buffalo’s music spans country, rock ‘n’ roll, bluegrass, Cajun, and Zydeco. First established in  1989, the band has played countless festivals, including Austin City Limits, Bonnaroo, and Philadelphia Folk Festival. A legend in the industry, Donna the Buffalo has opened  for The Dead, played backup for The Avett Brothers and Zac Brown, and toured with Rusted Root and Railroad Earth, to name a few. Doors open at 7 pm and the show starts at 8 pm. Heartless Bastards | Sunday, September 17th at 8 pm Anchored by the powerful vocals and incisive songwriting of Erika Wennerstrom, the Heartless Bastards are a roots rock band whose tough, emotionally resonant music  incorporates elements of blues, hard rock, garage punk, and country as filtered through tales of a hardscrabble life lived in the American Midwest. While Wennerstrom — the  group’s sole constant member — would later move the band to Texas, their sensibility stayed much the same, though her music would become more eclectic and ambitious and the lyrics more philosophical. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 pm. Grand Funk Railroad | Saturday, September 23rd at 8 pm Originating from Flint, Michigan in 1969, this legendary American rock group is renowned for its soulful vocals, muscular instrumentation, and iconic  melodies. Throughout their 50+ year career, Grand Funk has accumulated 13 gold and 10 platinum records with record sales exceeding 25 million copies sold worldwide. This  show at The Riviera is a part of the band’s “2023 The American band Tour,” which celebrates its 54-year legacy as one of the premier rock ‘n’ roll groups in history. Doors open at 7 pm and the show starts at 8 pm Shovels & Rope | Friday, September 29th and Saturday, September 30th at 8 pm Playing back-to-back nights at The Riviera, this American folk duo from Charleston is  composed of husband-and-wife team Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst. Their  signature sound combines folk, indie rock, bluegrass, and blues with classic Americana. Combining threads from their individual solo careers, Shovels & Rope formed in 2008  and has released nine acclaimed albums, many of which climbed the Billboard charts. In 2017, Shovels & Rope founded the High Water Music Festival, an annual event in Charleston that draws thousands to the Lowcountry. On both nights of their show at The Riv, doors open at 7 pm and the show starts at 8 pm.
